Day 10: An EASY Way To Assess Web 2.0 Properties There First
________________________________________
Hi there 30 Day Challengers,
Upon listening to Ed's video I thought I would 'give it a crack' at simplifying this step of the process.
As it is important - in that it will tell you if your job is going to be that much harder or not.
Now first up I'll take the stance of a more experienced Internet Marketer with this Strategy:
If that Marketer saw that the first page of the listings were littered with Web 2.0 urls (domains) then they are highly likely to NOT go into that market - as someone has already got in there using this strategy.
That marketer would also be assessing how Optimized they are and if there were any real gaps.
OK then
YOU reading this may well not be that experienced Internet Marketer.
That's OK
There is actually a really EASY way to do this.
How can I say this?
Because I have used this easy way - from not knowing squiddly do da whoopty bop about it - to taking it on board and then having success because of this.
SO THE SUPER SIMPLE METHOD IS:
Stage One
1. Focus on the first 10 listings of your search returns on the left hand side.
2. Look at the url's/domains. How many of the following do you see already there? How many out of 10, have a domain name that includes any of these words:
a) Squidoo
b) Hubpages
c) Tumblr
d) Netscape
e) Ezinearticles
f) Myspace
g) Youtube
h) Ehow
j) USfreeads
k) Zimbio
If no - YOU ARE HOME FREE - Get Ready To Rumble!!
3. Where are they on the page? Are they in the first 5 even?
Observe - Don't Judge
Stage Two - Are Those Web 2.0 Sites Optimized for the Same keyword as yours that you will be seeking to be ranked for?
If the answer to this is YES - then suggest it's a no go - someone's got their first and are doing a great job.
BUT
They may be there, and not optimized. Fingers, eyes, arms and legs crossed that is the case!
So:
1. Is the keyword phrase in the title?
2. Is the keyword phrase in the body of the listing?
3. Is the keyword phrase the Url/Domain?
If yes to all three - on a basic level (advanced people - please note I said basic ) it's optimized in our terms - so refer to above comment.
What is an easy way to tell if the keyword phrase is in any or all of these three places?
It appears bolded.
If its a no in any of these areas - glimmer of sunshine, might be worth a crack - YAY!
So you have done Stage One and Two
1. How many Web 2.0 properties are there?
2. How optimized is it based on the 3 criteria above?
Now - you may still want to go ahead - that's your call. This is a basic version of the process a more experienced IMer would take to assess the viability of this keyword, that you are ideally seeking to be well listed for.
Stage Three For Girly-Swots
You can stop at Stages One & Two, in the most basic terms you have enough to go on.
If you want to venture a bit further - at your own risk of confusion
We are still focused on the first 1-10 listings on your page view.
1. Look at the Page rank section (PR) is there a number or a blank?
If there is a number - that means simplistically (very) that it will be harder job to get good listings (aiming for the top 10 - position 1-2 ideally) as they have page rank, and you wont as yet.
2. Look at Y!Page Links (8 along) - does it have any back links? If so how many?
(these page links are called back-links)
Again this gives you an idea of how much they are working this keyword. If it has none - that's great for you. If it has 100's or 1000's not so.
Now this is not a section where you ask - well it has 5 or X backlinks, so is that good or bad?
I want to keep it simple ,and you only go to this level to observe and assess it as simplistically as I am doing above.
What this is telling you is how many back-links it has - so again how much they are working this keyword.
Now experienced SEO people will tell you even deeper ways to assess it (they most prob are reading this and cringing - lol) - I want to keep this 101 for you and still get the outcome you need - to know if this is optimized already or not.
So what do I mean by Optimized?
That they are doing a fair, good to great job already with leveraging the keyword to please Google and get good page placement ie: on the first page - aiming for Number One position.
As YOU want to get onto the first page and aim for number One.
So YOU need to find out what challenges you might face to achieve that.
So it is like the poor exhausted knight that has battled with Word Tracker and Google Trends - made them friends rather than foe. Saw that Google Competitive Searches could return a positive result...and then you face...
The Web 2.0 Dragon...da da da da....
Well knights of the 30DC Table - once you assess this and give it the Green Light...
You're in the Castle and now can get busy furnishing it so that your new influential friend Google wants to visit.
Best wishes to you all.
Caro

The forum is wonderful place with a lot of helpful people to guide us with any problems and situations that we might have.
We are all learning about this web.20 and what a major impact it is having on the way we do marketing on the internet compared to one year ago.
At present the servers have not been able to keep up with all of the traffic load such as the interest that the 30DC has created.
I am in a great team (Dream Team)and we will be watching out for each other as we proceed to a successful conclusion.

If you aren't Blogging yet, get started! Blogging is a fast and easy way to inform interested parties about your area of expertise. In addition, a big plus of Blogging is that Blog posts are picked up much faster by search engines than new Web pages.
I use and recommend Google's Blogger as an easy to use platform that allows even the most techno challenged to begin and grow a successful Blog. The new Beta Version @ http://beta.blogger.com is even easier to use and allows more customization than the older platform.
Here are some basics you need to consider when working on your Blog:
- Buy a descriptive domain name and have it point at the Blogger URL for your Blog. This let's you market your Blog as a unique entity while reflecting the tone and intent of your blog. Try something catchy and memorable.
- Make sure you sign up for all the RSS feed hubs that your target market is probably using. You've probably noticed these graphics, called chicklets, on most Blogs for My Yahoo, Google, My MSN, Newsgator, etc.
- Check out Feedburner.com as a way to setup your RSS chicklets (those little graphical icons for the various services), services and Pings. Pinging is when you post new content, the various services that check for updated Blog content get Pinged automatically when you update. This Ping notifies these services that there is something new on your Blog. Sort of like search engines for Blogs.
- Offer the ability to subscribe to your Blog and get posts by e-mail. Some folks just won't make it to your Blog to see what's new -- make it easy for them!
- When typing your posts, make sure to use a catchy title as that is the first thing folks will see when your updates are posted. You want to create a title that will attract their attention while, if possible, integrating keyword phrases about your main focus.
- It is very important, especially if you are Blogging for business, that you use proper sentence structure, grammar and check for typos. Blogger has a built-in spell check. Use it!
- Blog as often as possible and do no hesitate to show your personality! Blogs are expected to be more edgy and visitors actually want to get a an idea of who is behind the type on their screen. The more information, tips and commentary you can add the better. Do your best to post at least 3 times each week to keep your visitors and subscribers interested and coming back for more.
Those are just the basics to get your Blog up and running so that you can use it to cater to current customers, attract new customers and partners and get additional exposure for your business. And, you can have fun in the process by Blogging about what you know best!

So how do you attract attention to your blog amidst all that bustle. “There are many ways how one can do it. The most important way is to target a niche subject that you are passionate about and write your heart out,” says Kiruba Shankar, a pioneer of sorts in the Indian blogging space. Kiruba works actively to organise bloggers’ summits and unconferences.
He feels that with zillions of general interest blogs around, it’s important to focus on a niche area and do it exceedingly well. “Most of the popular blogs around are blogs that drill down deep on a particular subject,” says Kiruba. Spreading the word around about your blog is important too, and of course, there’s nothing like getting people to visit it and post their comments on it. Kiruba also fees that the URL in your email signature is important. “Get a domain name for your blog and let your email address contain the domain. I’ve done that with kiruba.com and I realise that’s helped me a lot,” he says. Your business card too could have your blog’s URL on it.
And the looks? Most blogs look so plain — that’s the most common comment from web surfers about blogs. But most bloggers think that design is an important part of blogs. “The design of a blog is very important,” says Ganesh APP, a tech blogger. Ganesh, who’s a third-year engineering student, has a blog on robotics, called bothack. Says Ganesh, “It’s great to have good content and usability, but if the design isn’t good people may not come back to your site. Worse still, they may just forget which site it was that they liked.”
Kiruba too agrees that design is very important: “Just like a neat dress makes an impression about a man, a good design for a blog is important. The good news is that there are tons of ready-made free templates that are available. You just need to choose it. There’s simply no excuse for having a bad blog design.”
But it’s necessary to keep the site simple — though that doesn’t mean it has to be plain or drab. A few nice looking elements that immediately get associated with your blog may be a good idea. “A lot like the Google site that has absolutely no clutter and is so easy to navigate,” says Ganesh. Flash-based sites are an absolute no-no and can slow down the site and exasperate visitors.
1. Buy It.
2. Attract It
3. Steal It
